Robert Philip “Pip” Runyan, of Sherwood, Arkansas, is now in the presence of our loving Creator, following a two year battle with cancer. He passed on the morning of August 24th, 2017. Born in Southeast Arkansas, Pip was extremely proud of being a McGehee Owl. He was a member of the undefeated 1969 state football championship team, which was a formative experience, impacting how he would coach for decades to come.
Deeply committed to the success of those he mentored on and off the field, Pip was recognized as a loving and impactful coach and educator at the many places he worked in the state of Arkansas. During his 40 year tenure as a teacher and coach, he was the recipient of multiple accolades, both in the classroom and on the athletic field.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dorothy T. and John R. Runyan, and half-brother Ricky Runyan, all of McGehee, Arkansas.
Pip is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jan Runyan, his two children Andy Runyan (Sarah) and Whitney Luth (Cameron), and three beloved grandsons. Other surviving family members include his sister, Patter Ramey (Tommy), and mother-in-law Joyce Hamilton, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews who will miss him greatly. Pip also leaves behind a far-reaching legacy impacting a multitude of students, athletes, co-workers, teammates, and friends.
