Lois Athalee Barnes, 85, of Paragould, passed from this life on Friday, October 27, 2023, at The Green House Cottages of Belle Meade. Lois was born in Shiloh, Arkansas, on March 1, 1938, to the late James Monroe and Ollie Mae Hooten. She worked at Ely & Walker for a short time before spending almost two decades at Arkla. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting. Lois loved to travel. She did not mind where they were going as long as they were going. She enjoyed seeing all parts of the country and spending time on the road with her husband, Wendell. Lois was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; great granddaughter, Alyzabeth Tompkins; great grandson, Justin Gilbee; brothers, Hubert and Lewis Hooten; sister-in-law, Ruby Hooten; nephews, James, George, and Steve Hooten; and niece, Rita Kennedy.
Lois is survived by her husband, Wendell Barnes of Paragould; daughters, Brenda (Keven) Hargrove Latimer of Piggott and Glenda Hargrove Lawson of Rector; bonus daughters, Linda Brown of Paragould and Lisa (Bob) Cook of Paragould; step-son, David Nelson of Paragould; grandchildren, Chad Tompkins, David (Tara) Tompkins, Michael (Jennifer) Hargrove, Toni Barnes, and Chris (Cassidy) Stallings; special great grandson, Ryan Tompkins; nine additional great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild with one on the way; and sister-in-law, Jean Kemper of Kennett.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 31, 2023, from 12-1 PM at Heath Funeral Home. The funeral will begin at 1 PM with Rev. Kenny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery. Pallbearers are Chad and David Tompkins, Michael Hargrove, David Nelson, and Chris and Xander Stallings.
