Laverta May Stewart

April 14, 1917 — October 5, 2017

Laverta Stewart, 100, of Paragould, passed away Thursday at Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro. She was a retired Special Education Elementary Teacher and was a member of the Grace United General Baptist Church. Laverta dropped out of school in the 9th grade because they couldn't buy books. She started to ASU (ASC then) when she was 40, finished in 3 years and taught the next year with 3 hours toward her masters. She started to college the same year her son started High School. After 100 years on this earth, she went to her heavenly home. What that must be like to worship at His feet. She was known to her grandchildren as "Big Momma". She was the daughter of the late Riley and Sula Bazzell Carmack. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Landon Dean Stewart; grandsons, James Stewart and Robert Suess; daughter, Norma Newsom.

Survivors include her son, Ben (Susan) Stewart of Vicksburg, Mississippi; grandson, Daniel (Karen) Newsom of Houston, Texas; granddaughter, Kellie Rogers; three great grandchildren, Tawny and Hunter Rogers and Abby Newsom.

Visitation will be Monday from 10-11 AM at Heath Funeral Home with the service beginning at 11:00 with Rev. Josh Carpenter officiating. Burial will be private.
