Burl “Spike” Eugene Stephens, 89, of Paragould, died March 7, 2014 at Walnut Ridge Nursing and Rehab. Burl was born to James and Nancy Belle (Beaton) Stephens, January 4, 1925 in Lafe, Arkansas. Burl worked for General Motors for over 37 years, and was also a member of the United Auto Workers Union. Mr. Stephens was also a member of Shiloh Methodist Church. Mr. Stephens is preceded in death by his wife Peggy Winchester Stephens, several brothers and sisters and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Arlene and Thomas Ragle, Iva and Chester Jamison, Alma and Lloyd White, James “Ras” and Gladys Stephens, Vernon Stephens, Wanda Gatewood Hardin and her husbands Harvel Gatewood and George Hardin, Velma Smith, and Gray Gerdes. Burl is survived by two step daughters: Carol Winchester of Marked Tree, Susan Smith of Jonesboro; two sisters and a brother-in-law: Catherine Gerdes of Jonesboro, Loretta and Buddy Smith of Paragould; one brother and sister-in-law: Thelbert and Viola Stephens of Paragould; one sister-in-law: Lorene Stephens; one brother-in-law: Gerald Smith; and one step grandson: Matthew Smith. Services will be 11:00 AM Monday, March 10, in the Heath Colonial Chapel with George Haygood officiating. Burial will follow in Ramer’s Chapel Cemetery.
